The vintage teak wood window frame is infused with a new life by using Annie Sloan chalk paints, especially meant for wood. Raagmala miniature paintings are used to decorate the 4 shutters using the decoupage technique.

 

Raagmala paintings, translated from Sanskrit as “garland of ragas” is a genre of Indian miniature painting based on musical melodies know as ragas. Each raga evoke a specific emotion, evokes a certain mood , represents a particular colour palette and meant to be played at a fixed hour of the day.

 

These paintings depict raginis, personification of different raaga’s wives depicting various raagas. Each raagmala painting is an amalgamation of art, poetry & classical music. They were popular genre in royal courts of medieval India.

 

RAAG BHAIRAVI:  This is a musical scale that is often referred to as the queen of morning ragas (melody). Compositions based on this raga are sung in praise of Shiva, one of the 3 main gods of the Hindu pantheon, in the morning to produce a devotional atmosphere.

 

In this painting, the wife of raga is personified as a female devotee at a Shiva shrine inside a palace ground. There is a lotus pond in the foreground from where she has offered fresh flowers to the lingam, an iconic form of Shiva in the shape of phallus. She is singing hymns in praise of the Lord and playing hand cymbals (manjira) as an accompaniment.

 

RAAG GUJARI: This raaga is played in late morning. It depicts a heroine who did not get a chance to express he love and hence she is feeling gloomy at heart. When in pain and distress, the heroine walks out of her palace, into the forest where she expresses her emotions by singing and playing veena (lute) under the shade of a tree that is embraced by a flowering creeper.

 

A pair of deer visits her hearing her song and look innocently at the damsel in distress. The deer is considered one of the gentlest animals and is shown as offering not only company to the desperate heroine but also affection and tender understanding of her sorrow.

 

RAAG KAKUBHA: This raaga is depicted as lovelorn heroine who is deceived by her lover.

He has not shown up at the meeting spot that makes heroine’s heart fill with sadness, so she leaves her place and wanders in the forest playing her musical instrument, veena.

 

The two peacocks looking at her also share the loneliness of the heroine as they walk around in search of their peahen.

 

 

RAAG SEHUTI: In this painting, raag sehuti is portrayed as a heroine with regal stature, as a wife of raag Malkaus, the one with a royal personality.

 

She is shown as a powerful heroine who commands control over the two lions. She has tamed them under her conroland smiles softly while caressing both of them.
